Algorithmic Morphology Assignment

Columbia is really pushing scripting and programming, with 3 or 4 studios concentrating solely on L-systems and turtles to generate organic systems of growth. Here's an interesting AD Magazine July/Aug 06 devoted to it: here.


My assignment for the scripting class I'm taking: "Architectural Organism":

The final project for the Algorithmic Morphology course will be to devise your own morphological system as a MEL script. The script should have a diverse performative range and capable of generating form at both a macro and micro scale simultaneously. The project should employ techniques used in the weekly exercises, and can also incorporate expressions. The techniques for open-ended growth, such as loops and recursion, can be used to create organic organizational schemes at a macro-scale. Simultaneously as your scripts grow and span the virtual environment of the Maya modeling window they should also be able to generate forms at a micro-scale using 'parametric' objects and functions. A simple example project woud be to create a MEL script that generates an urban landscape of streets (macro) and buildings (micro). Students willing to work in groups are encouraged to do so.

There are two major requirements for the final project.
1. Growth on the macro-scale
2. Parametric micro-scale
Requirements:
The project must include a script that has more than one MEL procedure/function. The script shoudl be organized with functions that operate at different scales or perform different roles in the 'organisms' development.
Presentation requirement
The project must be submitted online in your student gallery. Each student should submit:
1. a copy of the script
2. (5) 1024x768 renderings of different stages or results of the output of your script
3. A diagram describing the morphology of the form generated, linking elements of a resulting form/shape/organization back to the original script. The diagram should be submitted via email or disk and also uploaded to the website as a 1024x768 image.

Project shadowspace

Shadowspace continued: an ongoing exploration of urban voids, in-between space, and the intangible realm that lies at their periphery. Is it possible to generate form from the insubstantial?

Phase Two will concentrate on the use of different digital tools: scripting and programming in Maya's MEL language, and the ability of Max/MSP/Jitter to analyze and translate sound, video, and any other input into any output imaginable.
